Maternal circulation therefore contains a mixture of cf DNA and maternal DNA.
NIPT directly measures the amount of cf DNA in maternal circulation and can detect small excesses in counts of a chromosome.
It would give a high risk result of the fetus being affected with a Trisomy 13, 18 or 21 condition if an abnormality was detected.
Each screening test has a detection rate (DR) and positive rate (PR) which indicates the performance of the screen.
The best performing test is the one which has the highest detection rate and the lowest positive rate.
